Prayer with Fasting

'Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the Lord shall be thy rearward. Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am... And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not. And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in'

(Isaiah 58:8-9, 11-12)

The Plan:

To lead the church congregation (corporately and individually) in a 21 day duration of prayer with fasting for God's guidance and for the provision of special needs according to the Word of God.

Prayer and fasting will be held regularly at the church building, according to the following schedule. All congregation members are strongly encouraged to attend.

The Purpose:

First, one biblical purpose for fasting is to humble ourselves. David said, 'I humbled my soul with fasting' (Ps. 35:13). When we fast with right heart motives and in faith, in our act of humility God will exalt us (Matt. 23:12).

Another motive for fasting is to come closer to God. The Scripture says that if you 'draw near to God...He will draw near to you' (James 4:8).

A third reason for fasting is to understand God's Word more clearly. In times of fasting He gives us further, deeper understanding of His Word.

Another very important reason for fasting is to find God?s will and to receive direction in our lives. Read Ezra 8:21 as a specific example. When we take time to fast and pray, in humility, seeking God?s direction, we receive what we pray for.

Another very common reason for fasting is to receive healing. Isaiah 58:8 says, 'Thine health shall spring forth speedily'. This also applies to the deliverance of evil spirits (Matt. 17:21). Jesus was a direct example in this, as He fasted for 40 days before entering into His ministry of healing and deliverance.

We can also fast when we need God's intervention in some particular crisis, or when some tremendous problem has arisen that we can't handle by ordinary means (Refer to 2 Chron. 20). God is ready and willing to intervene on our behalf when we seek Him in prayer with fasting.

A final reason for fasting is to intercede and pray on behalf of others. This could imply praying for an unsaved family member, a sick friend, a wayward/rebellious child, church leadership, government officials, or your community.

The Pursuit:

Here are some various suggestions to assist you as you pursue prayer with fasting.

1. Get plenty of rest

2. Do some exercise, and try to get some fresh air

3. Decide on a suitable area of discipline in fasting (make it personal)

4. Give plenty of time to Bible study

5. Enter into fasting with positive faith

6. Don't wait for some emergency to drive you to fasting

7. Don't set yourself too difficult or too long a period of fasting

8. Set certain specific objectives in your fasting (make a list)

9. Avoid boastfulness and false humility while fasting

10. Keep a watchful check on your heart motives

11. Take proper care of your body

12. Be sensitive when fasting if you are on regular medication

13. Do not come under bondage to other people's theories

The Rewards: Listed are ten specific promises for those who fast and pray according to the Word of God: * Light   * Health   * Righteousness   * Glory   * Answered prayer   * Satisfaction * Continual guidance   * Refreshing   * Restoration   * Work that endures
